Ever had a sweet and spicy slice of pumpkin
pie? Sure you have. Ever had a pumpkin beer?
Seasonal ales and beers are increasingly
popular and fall is no exception. Right now
is the time to try the fall seasonal,
Pumpkin Ales. These products are each
distinctive and different enough for
everyone to find something they like.
Some brewers hand-cut pumpkins and drop them
in the mash and even roast the pumpkins,
which adds a tremendous depth of character.
Others use puree or pumpkin flavoring.
Most of the beers have some added flavors
with pumpkin pie spices, like: ground
ginger, nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon, and
allspice.
Pumpkin Ales are typically mild, with little
to no bitterness, a malty backbone, with
some spice often taking the lead. Many have
a slightly thick-ish, mouthfeel.
