Beer & Food Fun Facts KegsSearch the site

Draught (or Draft) beer is almost always un-pasteurized and therefore is more fragile. It should be consumed after being "tapped", and is generally truer to the flavors of the ingredients as pasteurization exposes the beer to heat and changes the flavor profile.

As draught beer is not pasteurized. It must be kept refrigerated between 35F. and 44F otherwise a beer will become wild, turn sour and cloudy in a day or two. Below 44F. a keg of draught beer should last 20-30 days before it loses it's fresh brewery taste and aroma. Craft beers (micro brews) tend to have a shorter shelf life and you should contact the brewery for their recommendations.

Commonly Asked Keg Questions
Q: How long will kegged beer keep and why does it go flat?
A: It will keep for a few days if you keep the beer cold, but it progressively changes in taste with each day it's exposed to air. Tapping your keg with a party pump is like opening a 2-liter bottle of soda -- it puts air into the container. CO2 then escapes the liquid and dissipates into the air, making the beer more flat.

Q: If I plan on drinking the keg over a period of a few days, what should I do?
A: Best thing to do is to untap the keg and keep the beer on ice! Cold beer will hang on to its CO2 longer. Do not pump more air into it -- that'll just oxidize the beer faster.

Q: What causes beer to foam?
A: Primarily, beer will foam when it is warm. Bouncing it down the stairs won't help. Keep it on ice and keep it still and you will have a happy keg.

Q: How much does a keg weigh?
A: A full keg weighs between 155-165 lbs, so be careful moving it, macho man. No need to give yourself a hernia. We'll help you load it but you're on your own to unload.

Q:  What causes cloudy beer - Beer in the glass appears hazy. Not clear.
A: Frozen or nearly frozen beer,  beer that was un-cooled for a period of time after pickup, or anything warm placed on the top of the keg

Q:  What causes flat beer where the foamy head disappears quickly. Beer lacks usual zestful brewery fresh flavor.
A: Beer too cold  or loose tap connections.
