Some Fun Beer Facts:

There are over 200 styles of beer produced throughout the world. photograph of a glass of beer

The growth of the specialty (craft or micro) beer segment has resulted in more breweries in the US than any other country in the world.

A 12 oz. beer has fewer calories than two slices of bread and contains no fat.

The average American annually consumes 47.3 gallons of soda, 26.5 gallons of coffee,
and 23.1 gallons of beer.

WHY SIX PACKS?  Pabst was the first brewery to package beer in six packs. After numerous studies, it was determined that six cans was the ideal weight for the average housewife to cart home from the store. Remember that in the '40s things were different from today.

Beer - A six pack of beer

1.       Beer has been around for thousands of years. It especially became a staple drink in the Middle Ages, when people began to live in cities where close quarters and poor sanitation made clean water difficult to find. The alcohol in beer made it safer to drink than water.

2.       Beer is made when yeast consumes the sugar derived from grain, usually barley-but before barley can be used to make beer, it must be malted, which involves a natural conversion process.

3.       Barley is what gives a cold pot of draught a good 'head'. And the barley variety that delivers the best head of beer to virtually all of the types brewed by Queensland brewers is Tallon, a northern variety developed by scientists from the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries (DPI&F) and named after a famous Queensland cricketer, Don Tallon.

4.       A good head on a pot protects the beer's flavour from atmospheric oxygen, which quickly destroys the taste. And it's also crucial in delivering that yeasty, hoppy aroma that beer drinkers love. But what most beer drinkers don't realise is the amount of science that is poured into getting a head of beer 'just right'.

5.       Scientists from DPI&F know how infinitesimal changes in the malting specifications of barley can turn a good head into a not-so-good-one. They work closely with brewers to ensure that barley varieties are exactly right and consider this to be the most important part of their value-adding research program. And with sixty per cent of the beer drunk in Australia produced from northern barley varieties, they seem to be getting it right.

6.       And finally in the words of the late great Slim Dusty, 'there's nothing so lonesome, morbid or drear than to stand in the bar of a pub with no beer'.
